Finger drumming on MIDI keyboard pads
Most finger-drumming lessons assume a 16-pad square like an MPC. The pads on many MIDI keyboards — an Akai MPK Mini, a Novation Launchkey, an M-Audio Oxygen Pro — are two rows: 8 pads (4×2) or 16 (8×2). fingerdrum.io lays out and fingers every pattern for those grids too, so you can learn on the keyboard you already have.

Why keyboard pads need their own layout
A layout written for a 4×4 uses four rows. On a 4×2 the top two rows don’t exist, so half the sounds have nowhere to go; on an 8×2 they turn into extra columns, and a fingering planned for a tall square no longer fits your hands. Rather than leaving you to translate, fingerdrum.io builds the layout for your grid.
Popular keyboards with pads, and which grid to pick
Checked against each maker’s own pages and user guides on 16 October 2026; the sources are listed under the table. Any keyboard whose pads send MIDI notes works the same way, so pick the grid that matches its rows.
| Keyboard | Pads | Your pads |
|---|---|---|
| Akai MPK Mini IV | 8 MPC pads in two rows of four, 2 banks; USB-C | 4×2 |
| Akai MPK Mini MK3 | 8 MPC pads in two rows of four, 2 banks; USB | 4×2 |
| Akai MPK Mini Plus | 8 MPC pads in two rows of four; class-compliant USB | 4×2 |
| Novation Launchkey Mini 25 / 37 MK4 | 16 pads in two rows of eight, with a Drum pad mode; USB-CNovation numbers the pads from the top-left; Map step by step goes by position, so that doesn’t matter. | 8×2 |
| Novation Launchkey 25 / 37 / 49 / 61 MK4 | 16 pads in two rows of eight; USB-C | 8×2 |
| M-Audio Oxygen Pro 49 | 16 RGB pads in two rows of eight; USB-powered | 8×2 |
| Arturia MiniLab 3 | 8 pads in a single row, 2 banks; class-compliant USB-COne row, so choose 4×2 and map the left four pads to the bottom row (kick, snare, hi-hats) and the right four to the top row. | 4×2 |
Pick your pads
Choose 4×4, 4×2 or 8×2 under Your pads: above the pads on every pattern page, in the home page player, on the Pads page and in the MIDI controller dialog. Your browser remembers it, and from then on the pads, the pad chart, the fingering and the computer keys all follow your grid.
4×2: the whole kit on 8 pads
The Smart layout already packs the drums into two rows, so on a 4×2 nothing moves:
- Bottom row: kick, snare or clap, hi-hat or ride, open hat or a second hi-hat.
- Top row: a second kick, a second snare, a second hi-hat and a cymbal, when the pattern uses them.
- Hands: left hand on the two left columns (the backbeat), right hand on the two right columns (time).
When a pattern has more sounds than 8 pads, each extra sound plays on the pad of the most similar one — a third tom on the other tom, a percussion hit on the rim — and the pad settings list every swap with its number of hits. You hear the groove as you play it.
8×2: the kit in the middle, extra sounds outside
On an 8×2 the same 8-pad kit sits in the middle four columns, right under your index and middle fingers. The left hand covers columns 1–4 and the right hand 5–8. Toms, a second snare or a cowbell that don’t fit the kit go on the outer columns, next to the kit first, so you reach them with a short move or the ring finger.
The fingering is planned for the wide grid: every pad gets a home finger, mostly index and middle, and a finger that’s busy at that moment hands the hit to a free one that doesn’t cross over. If you’d rather keep to the middle 8 pads, choose Swap sounds instead of Outer pads in the pad settings.
Your own layout on keyboard pads
Every layout on the Pads page works on an 8×2: its bottom two rows go in the middle and its top rows on the outer columns, so the hands stay on their side. On a 4×2 you get its bottom two rows; the editor keeps the rest for when you play a 4×4 or 8×2.
Play along on your keyboard
- MIDI: open MIDI controller on the playback bar (Chrome or Edge; Safari and iPhone don’t support Web MIDI), turn it on and choose Map step by step: it asks for the pads from the bottom-left, then the play / stop and tempo buttons. The pads must send notes; if they send CC messages, switch them to notes on the keyboard.
- Computer keys: on a 4×2, Z–V, A–F; on an 8×2, Q–R and Y–O, 1–4 and 6–9. The keys mirror the pads, so the bottom row of keys is the bottom row of pads.
- Sampler downloads: the MPC Sample and Koala projects stay 4×4, the format of those devices; the kit is on the bottom two rows of bank A, the same pads your 4×2 plays.
Questions
Which MIDI keyboards have pads for finger drumming?
Popular ones include the Akai MPK Mini IV, MPK Mini MK3 and MPK Mini Plus (8 pads in two rows of four), the Novation Launchkey MK4 and Launchkey Mini MK4 and the M-Audio Oxygen Pro 49 (16 pads in two rows of eight), and the Arturia MiniLab 3 (8 pads in one row). Pick 4×2 for 8 pads and 8×2 for 16 pads in two rows.
Can you finger drum on the pads of a MIDI keyboard?
Yes. A keyboard’s 8 or 16 pads play a whole groove — kick, snare, hi-hats and a cymbal fit on 8 pads. On fingerdrum.io choose 4×2 or 8×2 under Your pads, and every pattern is laid out and fingered for that grid.
What do 4×2 and 8×2 mean?
Columns × rows. A 4×2 is 8 pads in two rows of four, an 8×2 is 16 pads in two rows of eight, and a 4×4 is the 16-pad square of an MPC. Pads are numbered from the bottom-left in each case.
Will my keyboard’s pads work in the browser?
If the keyboard sends MIDI notes from its pads over USB and you use Chrome or Edge (Web MIDI; not Safari or iPhone), you can map its pads in the MIDI controller dialog. Pads that send CC messages need to be switched to send notes on the keyboard first.
